Jailers tried to save killer who murdered daughter - then boss told them to stop

Prison staff tried to save a killer who brutally murdered his own daughter, before a manager arrived and told them to stop.

Officers at HMP Gartree, a category B prison in Leicestershire, worked to save Nigel Malt's life for four minutes when the manager arrived and stopped them. Malt, 47, died of heart failure at the prison on Wednesday, April 29.

He had been serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years for murdering his daughter Lauren, 19, when he deliberately ran over her twice in his Mercedes. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigated his death and noted officers who found him carried out CPR for approximately four minutes despite the Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation order being in place.

An inquest held on October 28 concluded Malt died of natural causes. LeicestershireLive reported first responders to the incident were not attached to the wing Malt was housed on and, therefore, did not know about the policy in place and that "staff acted swiftly to try to save a life."

Once the custodial manager attended the scene, it became apparent the policy was in place and resuscitation actions were halted. A Prison Service spokesperson said on Monday: "Resuscitation was stopped as soon as staff became aware of the DNR. An internal review into this incident found no fault with staff actions."

The Prisons and Probations Ombudsman found that the clinical care Malt received was of a reasonable standard. Malt had been convicted of murder following a four-week trial at Norwich Crown Court in July 2022. The court heard he had driven to Lauren's home in King's Lynn, where he argued with her and her partner in the street.

Footage captured by a neighbour showed Lauren following Malt's black Mercedes C200 on foot as he started to drive away. Just seconds later, Malt stopped and reversed at speed, hitting Lauren with the car and ran over her again.

As witnesses raced to Lauren's aid, Malt got out of his car and picked her up from the road before placing her in the front passenger footwell. He had been drinking, and on the way to the hospital he stopped at a nearby shop where Lauren's mum worked

Lauren was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with a post-mortem examination establishing the cause of death as chest and abdominal injuries.

Malt had originally been sentenced to life with an minimum of 18 years in September, 2022. But his sentence was increased to a minimum of 22 years at the Court of Appeal on Thursday, December 15, 2022, after judges ruled the original term was "unduly lenient".

It was heard in court that Malt had been estranged from his family following several domestic incidents. Detective Chief Inspector Holly Evans, the senior investigating officer, said: "Lauren needlessly lost her life at the hands of her father, the very person who should protect her and keep her safe. This moment of rage had fatal consequences for Lauren and life-changing ones for the rest of their family, who continue to grieve for her."

In a statement, Lauren's family paid tribute to a "beautiful young woman who was loved by many", adding: "She was fun, friendly, and caring with a real zest for life and would always go out of her way to help anyone."
