I got on wrong side of Tuchel: Gibbs-White on England snub
Morgan Gibbs-White has opened up on his shattering World Cup snub and admitted he got “on the wrong side” of Thomas Tuchel’s opinion.
Gibbs-White was a surprise omission from Tuchel’s England squad on Friday and produced a fine response with his 18th goal of the season in Nottingham Forest’s final game of a chaotic campaign.
It is 25 goals and assists in total for the Forest captain, yet he was excluded from the final England squad, with Tuchel delivering the news in a phone call on Thursday evening.
Forest’s fans made their feelings known with derogatory songs about Tuchel while chanting “England’s No 10” throughout the match.
Gibbs-White also celebrated his goal by flashing up his fingers and pointing to his chest and name on the back of his jersey.
Though Arsenal’s Noni Madueke sustained a hamstring injury in the game at Crystal Palace, it appears inevitable that Gibbs-White will be left at home for the summer.
“I know myself that I have done more than enough to be in the squad,” he said. “I got on the wrong side of someone’s opinion. I have been on the wrong side of people’s opinions throughout my career, so I’m only going to bounce back.
“We had a good conversation. I respect him [Tuchel] for calling me and telling me the news. I agreed with what he had to say. I’m glad the season is behind us now, I’m going to concentrate on the summer.”
While Gibbs-White was left out, Forest team-mate Elliot Anderson has emerged as a key player in Tuchel’s squad. The former Newcastle midfielder seems certain to start England’s first game against Croatia on June 17.
Late in the second half, Anderson was taken off in what could be a farewell to the Forest supporters.
Manchester City and Manchester United are both interested in signing the £100m-rated midfielder later this summer and this could have been his final appearance in the red and white of Forest.
Vítor Pereira, Forest’s fourth head coach of the season, said: “If you ask me if he deserves the best clubs in the world, he deserves. He has a lot of quality, he is a talent, but he is our player and I am very happy with him.
“The market is the market, I cannot predict the market. I know we want to keep the same players, to bring two or three players to help us balance the squad. In the end, we’ll see.”
While Forest’s season was a roller coaster, it has been an outstanding year for Bournemouth.
Champions League football would have been the cherry on top for the Cherries, but Andoni Iraola bids farewell with the parting gift of European football for the first time in the club’s history.
Bournemouth could have secured the ultimate golden ticket if results involving Aston Villa and Liverpool had gone their way.
Yet it was Iraola’s fellow Basque, Unai Emery, who ended Iraola’s hopes as Villa’s win at Manchester City means Bournemouth will settle for the Europa League.
Bournemouth’s supporters were still chanting happily about European tours and it has been an outstanding season, with Iraola signing off with 18 games unbeaten, a sixth-placed finish and record points total of 57.
Iraola and the players celebrated in front of the away end with a huge flag bearing the words “Rayan Air” in tribute to their Brazilian winger.
After announcing his departure last month, Iraola must now choose his next destination, with Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen among the interested clubs. He will be replaced at Bournemouth next season by Marco Rose.
It is a stirring rise for the club, as it was only 14 years ago that they finished 11th in League One. Now they are recognised as a beacon for promoted clubs, a triumph of shrewd planning and recruitment.
“I didn’t want to focus on other things before the season ended. For me it was massive to get this team into Europe,” Iraola said. “Seeing teams like Bournemouth, Sunderland and Forest do it and finish above bigger clubs is great for the Premier League.
“Now I will have to take decisions and I suppose it will not take too long. I don’t really know what I am going to do. I know there are some options, but it is time now to recover a little bit, think with my family and let’s see where the future is.”
Forest secured survival earlier this month and Gibbs-White put them ahead with a shot from 20 yards after a short free-kick.
Bournemouth equalised through Marcus Tavernier early in the second half, but results at Anfield and the Etihad prevented a dream end to a fine season.
